The Rivebank Zoo is home to over 3,000 animals. Recent additions to the zoo include exhibits for African elephants, gorillas and koalas. Riverbanks also has a large botanical garden with a trail system available.
Hours: The zoo is open daily except Thanksgiving and Christmas. They are open 9 am to 5 pm except summer weekend when they are open until 6. Admission: Current admission prices are $9.75 (a) $ 8.50 (military) $8.25 (s) $ 7.25 (c 3-12). Children under 3 free. Admission is for both the zoo and gardens. Parking: There is plenty of parking and it is free.

Tyler spoke with the Babcock center about their mission in community service throughout Columbia.Today, Babcock Center offers great expectations and bright futures to over 800 citizens with lifelong disabilities. People with disabilities have the opportunity to advocate on their own behalf; to make choices about where to live, work and participate in leisure and other activities that contribute to their well-being. The Babcock center provides support and services to people with disablitlies. A non profit organization that focuses on helping people with disabilities become more independent and productive. They provide residential and day care as well as transportation.

Tyler talked with the American Red Cross about the importance of giving blood. You have the power to make a difference in someone's life. The Richland County Sheriff's Department DARE coordinator Deputy Arlene Sharp visited with Tyler, talking about the D.A.R.E. program.  She talked about the history of DARE, some of the stories she has collected in her 20 years with the program and more.

4-5-09 Good Deed Friday



Joyce Wagster joined Tyler to chat about the first annual Good Deed Friday with the West Metro Chamber of Commerce.  The goal of Good Deed Friday is to inspire folks to part with the things that they don't need, and provide them to those who do.

Good Deed Friday collects everything from food, clothes, even paper products and dog food.

3-1-09 Harvest Hope



Amy Lowery from Harvest Hope and Trey Hooey from Carolina Records joined Tyler to talk about the Harvest Hope food drive on March 7th 2009. The drive is at the Walmart on Highway 378 in Lexington 9am-2pm.

If you bring in food, Carolina Records will shred all of your personal documents. Folks are encouraged to bring in all old records, bank stubs, whatever you want to part with, and shred them, to cut down on the chance of ID Theft.

1/25/09 Sheriff Leon Lott




The Richland County Sheriff, Leon Lott stopped by to talk about some of the programs that the RCSD has been active in. Sheriff Lott spoke about the new physicals that are required of all his Deputies. This is to ensure that the officers that protect us are taking care of themselves. He also talked about the physical standards that all his officers must meet.

Sheriff Lott spoke about the Cyber Cop program that is offered through the RCSD. Cyber Cop is a program offered to parents, to help them monitor their children's online activities. The Sheriff noted that gangs are just some of the online dangers on websites like Myspace and Facebook. He pointed out that Cyber Cop can assist the parents in making sure that these types of individuals are not attempting to contact youngters, and if they try, there is a track for investigators to follow.

Sheriff Lott spoke about the Crime Stoppers program, which continues to solve crimes state wide. Remember that if you have information about criminal activity, you can report it, annoynomously. You can also, often, be paid for your information.

1/18/09 Columbia Opportunity Resource


Katherine Swartz and Caroline Fields from C.O.R. (The Columbia Opportunity Resource) discussed the World Beer Festival at the Convention Center on January 24, 2009. They discussed the volunteer opportunities with COR for the festival.

They also talked in depth about COR, its mission to the community, and how to become involved. COR is a network of professionals in the Midlands, which brings together the talent from all walks of life to make the area a better overall place to live, work, and play.

According to their mission statement, "COR is dedicated to fostering a greater sense of civic and community involvement in the Midlands through social, political and cultural education, communication, development and action. COR inspires and empowers a new generation of Columbians to make our city a better place. Through a long list of ongoing projects, events and campaigns, the members of COR foster a new level of social, political, and cultural engagement among this new generation of Columbia's leaders."
